Keith
Sophie Keith is a queer and disabled artist based in Newcastle Upon Tyne. Their practice combines sculpture and paintings composed of recycled and repurposed materials, which are inspired by horror, science fiction and folklore. Keith’s work investigates the use of myths as an explanation for the world we live in, and explores the manner in which mythology and popular culture overlap - how modern stories work in similar ways to traditional myths. Keith explores the use of myths as an explanation for the world we live in - if myths are only rooted in the old - when did myths stop being told? They are intrigued by the concept of film and theatre props and sets becoming emotionally charged objects - representative of how and why something has come to pass - studying the transition from mere object, to iconographic and symbolistic. They want to learn how people create rituals around fiction, and how belief is shaped through fantasy and storytelling.
